Problem adding DVDs with scanner

Ok I feel sill for asking this but how do you do it? I read the section in the help file but it didn't so anything. I have a USB CueCat and when I swipe it across the barcode nothing happens. I see a vertical red line which I assume is what needs to be moved across the UPC. I'm not sure of this has anything to do with it but when I plug it into either my MBP or G5 OS X pops up a thing asking me to identify the new keyboard. Both are running Leopard if that makes a difference. I have an older iBook G4 that still runs Tiger that I'm going to try later once I find its power cord.

hmm. It just started working fine without me changing anything I was doing before. Go figure.
