I have seen some discussion regarding playback with VLC vs. Apple DVD player. Can someone describe the advatages and disadvantages to each.
Thanks
VLC vs. Apple DVD Player
It's true that VLC does not check the region compared to DVD Player, but the 5 allowed changes that you're talking about are not implemented by DVD Player but by the firmware of the DVD drive; so even if one chooses to use VLC the DVD Region lock is still present. You can only change the DVD Player's dvd region code 5 times. After that it's locked. With VLC there's no region lock.
Now that the new VLC listens for the Apple remote control I use them interchangeably. Although I do prefer the floating controls in DVD Player; but because I am used to them, not because they might be superior.
